MANDATORY SETS FOR THE 2017 GRANDS PRIX OF AUSTRALIA AND CHINA

NEW MATERIALS AND A COMPLETELY FRESH DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
DEFINE THE NEW-GENERATION RANGE OF TYRES

PIRELLI ANNOUNCES COMPOUND CHOICES AND MANDATORY SETS
FOR THE 2017 GRANDS PRIX OF AUSTRALIA AND CHINA

NEW MATERIALS AND A COMPLETELY FRESH DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
DEFINE THE NEW-GENERATION RANGE OF TYRES

With the 2016 championship just over, Pirelli is already thinking to the coming F1 season. As the tyre nomination for long-haul events has to be made 15 weeks in advance, whereas for European races the deadline is nine weeks in advance, Pirelli announces the following three compounds for the first and second rounds of the 2017 Formula One season.

In AUSTRALIA*, to be held (March 24 – 26) on the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne:
P Zero
Yellow soft
P Zero
Red supersoft
P Zero
Purple ultrasoft

These are the tyres that must be available (one of them to be used) at some point in the race:
One set of P Zero
Yellow soft
One set of P Zero
Red supersoft

There are the tyres assigned for Q3 in qualifying:
One set of P Zero
Purple ultrasof

In CHINA*, to be held (April 7 – 9) on the Shanghai circuit:
P Zero
White medium
P Zero
Yellow soft
P Zero
Red supersoft

These are the tyres that must be available (one of them to be used) at some point in the race:
One set of P Zero
White medium
One set of P Zero
Yellow soft

There are the tyres assigned for Q3 in qualifying:
One set of P Zero
Red supersoft

Following the regulations, each driver must save for Q3 one set of the softest of the three nominated compounds. This set will be given back to Pirelli after Q3 for those who qualify in the top 10, but the remaining drivers will keep it for the race.

The teams are free to choose the remaining 10 sets; making up 13 sets in total for the weekend.

2017 TYRES’ NEW FRAME

  • The range has been completely transformed, with new sizes (305/670-13 at the front and 405/670-13 at the rear) as well as new profiles, constructions and compounds.
  • The compounds in particular make use of entirely new materials and a completely fresh design philosophy.
  • After a very positive testing programme with the new sizes Pirelli has decided to additionally homologate a back-up compound alongside each of the five new base compounds. These extra compounds are formulated using more traditional criteria compared to the new base compounds.
  • For the first part of the championship, only the new-generation base compounds have been selected.
  • The back-up compounds could be introduced later during the course of next season to respond to any particular requirements once the real performance levels of the 2017 cars have been identified.

Tider for Formel 1 i helgen, Norsk tidssone 🙂

[table id=5 /]

Litt statistikk fra Wikipedia:

Number of wins Driver Years
6 Germany Michael Schumacher 1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004
4 Germany Sebastian Vettel 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013
3 United Kingdom Lewis Hamilton 2007, 2014, 2015
2 Japan Motoharu Kurosawa 1969, 1973
Austria Gerhard Berger 1987, 1991
Brazil Ayrton Senna 1988, 1993
United Kingdom Damon Hill 1994, 1996
Finland Mika Häkkinen 1998, 1999
Spain Fernando Alonso 2006, 2008

Og i følge denne statistiken tyder vel alt på at Sebastian Vettel eller Lewis Hamilton skal dra i land seieren i årets Japan Grand Prix, allerede før første fritrening …

Pirelli Singapore GP Preview – 2016

Round 15 of 21
Marina Bay, Singapore, 15-18 September 2016

Marina Bay, Singapore, 15-18 September 2016

Milan, September 12, 2016 – For the only true night race of the calendar, held on the stunning streets of Singapore, Pirelli’s P Zero Purple ultrasoft tyres make a return for the first race since Austria, alongside the supersoft and soft. The three softest tyres in the P Zero range have been selected to cater for the unique demands of the Marina Bay street circuit: a long lap, fluctuating track temperatures, and a physically demanding race for both drivers and cars. With the barriers so close to the side of the track, no mistakes go unpunished during this two-hour marathon held in humid conditions.

THE CIRCUIT FROM A TYRE POINT OF VIEW:

  • Singapore has the highest number of corners of any circuit all year (23) but is the second-slowest lap after Monaco: placing demands on tyres in terms of cornering, braking and traction.
  • The surface is typically bumpy, also with street furniture such as painted lines and manholes.
  • Being run at night, track temperatures don’t evolve in the usual way seen at a daytime race.
  • Ambient temperatures still remain high though, meaning drivers have to manage degradation.
  • A long race and high safety car probability open up many different tyre strategy opportunities.
  • Low downforce means all the mechanical grip comes from tyres: the left-rear works hardest.
  • Pit stop time is long due to a lower speed limit and long pit lane: a key strategic consideration.

THE THREE NOMINATED COMPOUNDS:

  • Yellow soft: the hardest set available this weekend, capable of long stints at Marina Bay.
  • Red supersoft: a versatile compound, which proved to be a key element of last year’s race.
  • Purple ultrasoft: designed to offer a considerable pace advantage: will be used in qualifying.

HOW IT WAS A YEAR AGO:

  • Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won with a two-stop strategy, starting on supersoft, switching to supersoft again on lap 13 then soft on lap 37. There were two safety car periods.
  • Best alternative strategy: Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen went for an alternative two-stopper (supersoft-soft-supersoft) to finish eighth from a lap down after the start.

PAUL HEMBERY, PIRELLI MOTORSPORT DIRECTOR:

“Singapore is probably the most spectacular circuit that we visit all season, and this year we hope to make it even more special with the arrival of our rapid ultrasoft compound, in order to maximise the speed and grip available at the Marina Bay track. This is one of the most unpredictable races of the year – it’s the only track with a 100% safety car record – so all the complex variables inevitably throw up opportunities for teams to do something creative with strategy. In terms of competition, it looks set to be one of the closest races we will see all year, where tyre management will make a big difference.”

WHAT’S NEW?

  • Following some minor changes to the circuit in 2015, there are no big alterations this year.
  • The 2017 tyre test campaign continued last week, with Ferrari and Mercedes mule cars.

OTHER THINGS THAT HAVE CAUGHT OUR EYE RECENTLY:

  • Ferrari has gone for the most aggressive tyre choice, with a maximum allocation of ultrasoft.
  • Pirelli recently won the FIA European Hillclimb Championship (the oldest FIA championship still in existence) with Italy’s Simone Faggioli claiming a record-equalling ninth title.
  • The penultimate round of the European Rally Championship takes place in Latvia on the same weekend as Singapore, with Pirelli standing a strong chance of clinching another title.

Belgian GP 2016 – Race results

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg take the win in an incident packed race at Spa Francorchamps.

Todays Formula 1 race from the fantastic Spa Francorchamps in Belgium was one of the best I have seen in a long time.

The action started already in the first corner when Max Verstappen went for gap that never existed, quite immature move after such a poor start.

Max Verstappen also drove like an immature “kid” on several occasions through the race, putting people of track here and there.

Kevin Magnussen had a huge accident on the top of Eau Rouge. I think he was “lucky” that the car hit the barrier in the angle it did, it could have ended much worse than it did. According to the Renault F1 team on twitter Kevin most probably has hurt his left ankle, more information will follow after the check at the hospital has been completed.

Rosberg took a well deserved win in front of a very happy Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton ended on P3 after help with a “free” tyre change under the red flag.

My money today was on Hulkenberg and Kimi, so no luck there 🙂

PIRELLI BELGIAN GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Round 13 of 21
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, 25-28 August 2016

Following a short summer break, Formula 1 resumes at the one of the most epic drivers’ circuits of them all: Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The P Zero medium, soft and supersoft tyres have been nominated for the longest lap of the year at 7.004 kilometres, which places high-energy loads through the tyres. Spa-Francorchamps in fact provides a real multi-faceted challenge for the tyres, and by extension for the teams and drivers as well. The historic circuit at the foothills of the Ardennes is renowned for its changeable weather, meaning that there is a true microclimate to provide a constant additional parameter for the strategists to consider.

THE CIRCUIT FROM A TYRE POINT OF VIEW:

  • Loads through the tyres are among the biggest of the year due to the long and fast corners.
  • Elevation changes also create vertical forces for tyres through compressions like Eau Rouge.
  • Rain is quite likely, but it frequently rains just on one part of the circuit and not on another.
  • Set-up is a compromise between low drag for straights and downforce for corners: not easy.
  • There are plenty of overtaking opportunities, which mean that strategy options are quite open.
  • F1 returns with yet another back-to-back: after Spa it’s straight to Pirelli’s home race at Monza.

THE THREE NOMINATED COMPOUNDS:

  • White medium: a mandatory set that must be available for the race, low working range.
  • Yellow soft: again a mandatory set, should feature in the race but not ideal for long stints.
  • Red supersoft: will be used for qualifying with a focus on performance rather than durability.

HOW IT WAS A YEAR AGO:

  • Lewis Hamilton won comfortably with a two-stop strategy, changing tyres on laps 13 and 30.
  • Best alternative strategy: Max Verstappen finished eighth from 18th on the grid, having adopted a three-stop strategy and passing several cars on track.

PAUL HEMBERY, PIRELLI MOTORSPORT DIRECTOR:

“Spa-Francorchamps needs no introduction as one of the most iconic circuits out there. For the tyres, it’s a demanding track with the sort of high-energy loads that make it absolutely thrilling to drive. It’s not easy to find the right set-up but with such a long lap and plenty of overtaking opportunities, there are a number of different strategy permutations possible. During the summer break we’ve started testing the 2017-size tyres, and we look forward to a busy second half of the season as we continue the testing campaign and also move straight on to our home race the weekend after Belgium.”

WHAT’S NEW?

  • There are no significant changes to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit and infrastructure this year.
  • Esteban Ocon becomes a full-time Formula 1 driver, taking over from Rio Haryanto at Manor.

OTHER THINGS THAT HAVE CAUGHT OUR EYE RECENTLY:

  • Pirelli was at the forefront in Spa last month with the famous 24 Hours. It was the Italian firm’s biggest-ever event with a total of 65 cars fitted and 10,724 tyres over 29,269 cumulative laps.
  • The 2017 tyre tests with modified mule cars got underway at the beginning of the month, with Ferrari at Fiorano (driven by Sebastian Vettel and Esteban Gutierrez on wets) and Red Bull at Mugello (driven by Sebastien Buemi on slicks).

German GP – Tyre sets available for the race

Paul Hembery:
“It looks like we might be seeing a mixture of two and three stop strategies, with the running up to now showing that there could be a few quite different approaches to the race.”

How the tyres behaved during the qualifying:

Medium: Not used during qualifying but might be used in the race as tactics will vary.
Soft: Used by the Mercedes drivers only to get through Q1: could be key to the race.
Supersoft: Around 1.5s faster than the soft on Friday; around 1 sec. gap seen in quali.

Possible race strategies and maximum laps*:
Pirelli recommends that the following numbers of laps are not exceeded on each compound:
Soft = 29 laps
Supersoft = 22 laps

On this basis, the optimal pit-stop strategies predicted by Pirelli are as follows:

QUICKEST
Three-stopper: three stints on supersoft + one stint on soft

SECOND-QUICKEST
Two-stopper: two stints on supersoft + one stint on soft (maximizing the stints on supersoft)

THIRD QUICKEST
Two-stopper: two stints on supersoft + one stint on soft (maximizing the single stint on soft)

SLOWEST
Two-stopper: one stint on supersoft + two stints on soft

Different permutations of compound usage within each strategy are possible.

This information is provided just as an indication based on data received from Pirelli.
