MINI at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017

The MINI E was originally produced as a small series of 600 electric vehicles and was field-tested in real, everyday driving situations.

The British premium brand is paving the way for pure electric driving fun with the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept and the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 – already available to purchase. A diverse line-up of MINI models, including the new Ice Blue Edition, will also be on display at the International Auto Show in California.

 


 

MINI’s appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017 will focus on the diversity of its current model programme as well as its vision of future driving fun, so typical of the MINI brand.

The highlight of the show will be the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept. The British premium brand’s concept vehicle is the precursor to emission-free mobility, MINI-style. The MINI-typical go-kart feeling takes on a whole new level thanks to the purely electric drivetrain.

From 1 – 10 December 2017 MINI will also be presenting its entire spectrum of models to visitors of the LA Auto show. The new, limited Ice Blue Edition, which has been produced especially for the US market, will also be on display.

For 15 years now MINI has been consistently exciting a growing fan base with efficient driving fun, distinctive design and individual style. During this time the brand has not only succeeded in further strengthening its model programme but has also conquered new customer target groups. This development will be reflected at the MINI stand at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The MINI Hardtop 2 door, the MINI Hardtop 4 door and the MINI Convertible represent the pinnacle of the premium small car segment. The brand has established itself furthermore in the premium compact segment with the MINI Clubman and MINI Countryman.

 

 

MINI Electric Concept: Urban Driving Fun with zero-emissions.

MINI has once again chosen the Los Angeles Auto Show to stage its vision of future mobility MINI-style with the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept.

In November 2008 the International Auto Show in California became a showcase for the world premiere of the MINI E. For the first time ever the British premium automotive producer presented a purely electrically-driven vehicle, based on the predecessor of the current MINI Hardtop 2 door.                                                                        

The MINI E was originally produced as a small series of 600 electric vehicles and was field-tested in real, everyday driving situations. The BMW Group incorporated the knowledge drawn from this trial into the development of the BMW i3 among other vehicles.

 

 

Electro-mobility MINI-style – to be experienced on the road soon

The design and vehicle concept of the MINI Electric Concept illustrates perfectly how electric mobility in the urban environment can enrich the distinctive charm, individuality and driving experience of a MINI. The MINI E’s powerful electric engine excites with quick reactions at the touch of the accelerator. Its energy is derived from a lithium-ion battery. MINI-typical agility, as well as maximum range, is, therefore, ensured when driving emission-free.

The MINI Electric Concept epitomizes a distinctive form of electro-mobility which will soon be experienced in every day driving. The BMW Group has already announced the development of a purely electrically driven MINI series vehicle. The first of these large-scale produced MINIs with battery-electric drivetrains will be available from 2019 – exactly 60 years after the launch of the classic Mini.

This model ensures electro-mobility is a MINI-typical experience of driving fun, style and individuality. The electric drivetrain will be built at the BMW Group’s e-mobility centre at Plants Dingolfing and Landshut in Bavaria before being integrated into the car at Plant Oxford, which is the main production location for the MINI 3 door model.

 

 

Forerunner for electric driving fun: The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4.

The MINI Electric Concept will be presented side-by-side with the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. The British brand’s first Plug-in-Hybrid model is already paving the way for pure electric driving fun.

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is an all-rounder with a difference. With five seats, a generous boot and numerous mod cons it ensures on-brand driving fun, either side of the city boundaries. Its power is derived from a combustion engine and an electric motor, which combined reach a system performance of 221hp. In pure electric mode the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 reaches a top speed of 78mph, ensuring a large part of the daily driving can be completed emission free.

When an increase in performance is required the combustion engine is activated. The precisely steered interaction of the power to the front wheels through the combustion engine, and to the rear wheels through the electric motor ensures an intelligent all-wheel drive. Superior driving fun in all weather conditions and on all road surfaces is, therefore, guaranteed.

 

 

MINI Countryman and MINI Clubman: Two individual characters in the premium compact segment.

The Plug-in-Hybrid drivetrain renders the new MINI Countryman a pioneer in the area of sustainable mobility. Furthermore, two additional engine variants of the largest and most versatile MINI model in the US American market are available.

The MINI Cooper Countryman is powered by a 134 hp 3-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder engine of the MINI Cooper S Countryman enables a top speed of 189 hp. Both models come as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and optionally with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission (MINI Cooper S Countryman only). Furthermore, both the MINI Cooper Countryman and MINI Cooper S Countryman can be combined with all-wheel drive ALL4.

With an identical drivetrain, the new MINI Clubman also ensures unique driving fun in the premium compact segment. Moreover, its unique body concept ensures it stands out in this vehicle category. Four side doors and the two Split Doors at the rear present a modern interpretation of the classic Shooting Brake. Its suitability for daily driving use is underlined with five fully-fledged seats, a large luggage compartment and flexible configuration of its floor space.

 

 

MINI Hardtop 2 door, MINI Hardtop 4 door and MINI Convertible: three Originals in the premium small car Segment

The foundation for the success of the MINI brand over the last 15 years in the USA has been laid thanks to the premium models in the small car segment. The Original in this vehicle segment distinguishes itself through its high-quality engine, chassis technology, premium quality and individuality. The hatchback body shell is represented as always by the MINI Hardtop 2 door. It is available in the USA as a MINI Cooper with 134hp and as a MINI Cooper S with 189 hp.

The latest limited edition model will draw visitors’ attention to the MINI Hardtop 2 Door. At the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017 the limited Ice Blue Edition, produced especially for the USA will also be on display.

With MINI Ice Blue Edition, one of the most popular and iconic MINI body colours returns as an exclusive MINI Hardtop 2 Door. Available as a Cooper with a white roof and mirror caps, or as a Cooper S with the sporty punch of Bright Orange side stripes and mirror caps, it’s pure classic cool, with essential modern upgrades.

The principle of clever use of space, used ever since the classic Mini, has been consistently developed with the MINI Hardtop 4 door. In addition to the two extra doors, the functionality of the vehicle is increased by the 161 mm longer body and three rear seats.

It combines brand-typical driving fun with exclusive open air pleasure and also in the current generation, it is the only premium cabriolet in its vehicle category. The open-air 4-seater is also available with two engine variants – as MINI Cooper Convertible and as MINI Cooper S Convertible.

The latest generation of John Cooper Works models offers a genuine race track feeling for the road. Four top athletes are currently available and they have this in common: a drive-train, chassis and exterior and interior modelling derived from an established knowledge of motorsport and tested on the race-track. BMW Active Hybrid e-bike

The BMW Active Hybrid e-bike is equipped with a comprehensively revised drive concept, which makes its presence felt in the form of a significant power boost. The advanced Brose electric motor can be activated as required to supplement the rider’s pedal power. Producing output of 250 W and 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) of torque, the motor injects extra dynamism and serves up the agility for which BMW is renowned. Providing the energy for the electric pedal assistance – over a range of up to 100 km (62 miles) – is a removable 504 Wh battery. The rider can adjust the degree of pedal assistance with ease via the new display; four different power modes (from ECO (+50%) to TURBO (+275%)) can be selected up to a maximum 25 km/h (16 mph). Plus, the micro USB socket and Bluetooth function allow customers to hook their smartphone up to the bike.

 

The LED light integrated into the aluminium mudguard over the rear wheel maximises safety and adds a further design flourish.

 

 

Saddling up securely with the eZone.

E-bikes not only deliver an inimitable riding experience, they also place very specific demands on their saddles. Which is why saddle maker Selle Royale commissioned BMW Group subsidiary Designworks to develop the first-ever saddle tailored specifically to the requirements of e-bikers. The innovative form of the “eZone” (on sale since September) is based on a zonal concept fine-tuned to the particular attributes of e-bikes and the need profiles of their riders. A short nose, a rising seat surface at the rear and moving side wings create a stable seating position and improve balance when pushing off and braking. And they also ensure safety in typical e-bike acceleration situations. The eZone likewise convinces with an increase in comfort courtesy of three-zone padding featuring 3D Skingel and Royal Gel. Meanwhile, the fibreglass handle integrated into the underside of the saddle makes the bike easier to move around; e-bikes are often heavier than classic bicycles on account of their drive module.

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo

Parallel to the start of the largest model initiative in the history of the brand, BMW is also increasing the attractiveness and diversity within the range of existing series with a multitude of new features being introduced in the autumn of 2017. From November 2017, the new BMW M550d xDrive Touring and the new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo will become available, whilst as from December 2017, two new petrol engine variants will be offered for the new BMW X3. Furthermore, the choice of special equipment features for the new BMW X3 will be complemented by exclusive exterior and interior options by BMW Individual.

The BMW X1 xDrive20d will in future come with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. Moreover, as from November 2017, the range of optional light alloy wheels for the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) will be complemented by five new variants. In addition to the introduction of the BMW Connected Services Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for Business, the upgrade of BMW Connected+ with new personalized digital mobility services will ensure further advancement in the field of intelligent networking. Starting in the autumn of 2017, the number of cities in which the digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information can be utilized will increase even further.


 

BMW M550d xDrive Touring.

New BMW M Performance model: BMW M550d xDrive Touring featuring the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine available worldwide.

From November 2017, the fleet of exceptionally sporty BMW M Performance automobiles will be complemented by a fascinatingly powerful but also an impressively efficient model variant of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. The new BMW M550d xDrive Touring will feature the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine available worldwide. The M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology used on the 3-litre, straight six-cylinder power unit comprises multi-stage charging with four turbochargers and Common Rail direct injection operating at a maximum pressure of more than 2,500 bar. A maximum power output of 294 kW/400 hp and a peak torque of 760 Nm available between 2, 000 and 3, 000 rpm ensure spontaneous response and constant power delivery across the entire speed range.

The BMW M550d xDrive Touring brings its exceptional engine performance to the tarmac via an 8-speed sports transmission and intelligent rear-wheel oriented four-wheel drive technology and accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. The sporty diesel engine convinces not only with highly responsive performance characteristics but also with impressive fuel economy. Combined fuel consumption of the new BMW M550d xDrive Touring is between 6.7 and 6.4 liters per 100 km.

Included in the standard equipment range for the BMW M550d xDrive Touring are, inter alia, an M sports suspension, Integral Active Steering and model-specific exterior and interior features. Moreover, 19-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres and the M sports brake system underscore the BMW M Performance model’s dynamic character.

Superior and efficient: The new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo.

As from November 2017, the model range of the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo will be extended with the production start of a second diesel engine variant. The new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo combines sporty performance and supreme ride comfort with a high level of efficiency. Its 3-litre straight six-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology features multi-stage charging with variable intake geometry for the high and low-pressure chargers as well as Common Rail direct injection. It delivers 235 kW/320 hp and a maximum torque of 680 Nm.

In conjunction with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and the intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive, the powerful diesel engine allows the new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo to accelerate from 0 to100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is between 6.2 and 5.8 liters per 100 km, with corresponding CO2 emission levels of 163 to 153 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size).

 

The BMW X3: Starting with two additional engines and special equipment features by BMW Individual.

In December 2017, just a few weeks after the market launch of the new BMW X3, two four-cylinder petrol engines are to be added to the drive portfolio. In addition to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with Twin Scroll turbo charger, High Precision Injection, fully variable valve control VALVETRONIC and variable camshaft control Double VANOS, both 2-litre power units also boast a weight-optimised design and a new engine encapsulation system for optimising acoustic characteristics and warm-up behaviour. They come as standard with the combination of an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent four-wheel drive technology BMW xDrive

The engine featured in the new BMW X3 xDrive20i delivers a maximum power output of 135 kW/184 hp and a peak torque of 290 Nm. The car’s sporty characteristics are reflected in an acceleration of 8.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, an exceptionally economical average fuel consumption of between 7.3 and 7.1 liters per 100 km and CO2 emission levels of 168 to 163 grams per km. The second petrol engine delivers a power output of 185 kW/252 hp and 350 Nm of torque, allowing the new BMW X3 xDrive30i to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is between 7.3 and 7.2 liters per 100 km with CO2 emission levels of 168 to 164 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size).

The extra dose of luxury and exclusiveness added to the new BMW X3’s character is also reflected in the extensive range of products offered by BMW Individual. The BMW Individual body colour variant Sun Stone metallic effectively accentuates the powerfully modelled surfaces of the Sports Activity Vehicle in a most impressive manner. The sophisticated interior ambience is created by the BMW Individual upgraded leather trim Merino in the colour combinations Fiona Red/Black, Ivory White and Tartufo, door sills bearing the BMW Individual lettering and BMW Individual interior trim strips in a black piano gloss finish.

BMW X1 xDrive20d now with 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, new light alloy wheels for the compact SAV.

Starting November 2017, the 140 kW/190 hp four-cylinder engine in the BMW X1 xDrive20d will come as standard in conjunction with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission, allowing the compact SAV to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Average fuel consumption of the BMW X1 xDrive20d is between 4.8 and 4.7 litres per 100 km.

Enhanced networking and productivity inside the vehicle: Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for Business, On-Street Parking Information in further European cities.

With the integrated function Microsoft Office 365, BMW is the first manufacturer to offer a safe server connection for the exchange and processing of emails, calendar entries and contact data. This function allows direct transfer of addresses from calendar entries into the navigation system and selection of telephone numbers via the connected mobile telephone. Moreover, from the end of September 2017, it will be possible to use the Unified Communication solution Skype for Business from Microsoft inside the car. This service is also fully integrated into the onboard iDrive control system. Upcoming telephone conferences are automatically identified. It is possible to participate simply by pressing the controller. During the journey, the name of those taking part in the discussion can be shown on the Control Display. The new BMW ConnectedDrive service will first be available in Germany, Great Britain and France. Additional countries are to follow at the end of 2017.

From the autumn of 2017, the number of European cities in which the unique On-Street Parking Information service, which assists the driver in finding a free parking space at the roadside, will be extended even further. The digital parking space finder, which is available in conjunction with the Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) service for all current BMW models, can be also used in the Swedish cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö as well as in the French cities of Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Nantes and Toulouse. Moreover, the cities of London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast in the UK have been added to this list.

 

BMW Connected with new services.

The intelligent networking of the vehicle and the driver’s Smartphone will be further intensified with the service package BMW Connected+. Since July 2017 the extended range of digital services has been available for all current BMW models and BMW i models and comprises the highly personalised and simple display of Smartphone contents inside the car as well as new mobility services.

MINI is shaping the future of urban mobility by providing driving fun in increasing diversity. At the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the British premium brand gives visitors an impression of how the unmistakable MINI feeling will develop in future to cover a broader range beyond the current model program. Innovative concepts and technologies provide additional room for individual flair and highly emotional experiences, while continuing to enhance the thrilling agility and exemplary efficiency that are typical of MINI.

The world premiere of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept turns the brand’s stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show into a pit lane. The concept study conveys spontaneous readiness, offering a genuine foretaste of an extremely dynamic serial production model that is constantly able to demonstrate its race track suitability while at the same time reaching a new level of excellence in terms of driving fun in day-to-day traffic due to the fact that is approved for road use. Powerful proportions, expressive colours and exterior components that can be clearly seen to optimise both weight and aerodynamic properties – all this is already suggestive of outstanding performance properties.

The MINI Electric Concept showcased in Frankfurt for the first time embodies a whole new dimension of the brand’s characteristic go-kart feeling, now combining it with locally emission-free mobility. The concept vehicle conveys a message of sustainable urban transportation in MINI style while at the same time previewing a volume production model that will follow soon. Lots of driving fun on a small surface area – this traditional principle will remain an integral part of MINI in the future, too. Once again the British small car left the larger and more powerful competition behind it, finally cementing its status as an all-time legend. As long ago as 20 years there was a clear indication of how much the model’s racing career influenced not only the history of the classic Mini but also the development of the modern MINI. The MINI ACV 30 concept car was presented at the Monte Carlo Rally in January 1997.

The Anniversary Concept Vehicle came out right on time to mark the 30th anniversary of its third win at the “Monte” – and its powerful proportions caused a sensation on the streets of the Principality of Monaco. At the same time, the two-seater powered by a mid-mounted engine demonstrated how the classic Mini’s characteristic design features – such as the hexagon radiator grille and the large circular headlamps – could be transferred to a modern vehicle concept. As such, the MINI ACV 30 was not merely reminiscent of the brand’s origins: it was also a consistent recasting of the brand’s traditional values to meet the requirements of urban mobility in the 21st century. The foundation stone was laid for a new era full of driving fun and individual style in a variety of forms.

Diversity and individual character are also embodied by the other elements of the MINI trade fair showcase in Frankfurt. From 14 to 24 September, the British premium manufacturer presents a broad cross-section of its range, containing elements drawn from the current model program, its rich selection of optional equipment and the latest additions in the area of accessory and lifestyle products. The setting for this display of both current and future items is Hall 11 at the main entrance to the Frankfurt trade fair centre, a site that will be shared by the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands.

 

 

 

Racing feeling with a tradition: MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept.

The MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept showcased at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show radiates pure power and uncompromising sporty flair. With a design inspired unmistakably by motor racing, it arouses the expectation of authentic, unadulterated and highly intense race feeling. Together with a spirited turbo engine and suspension technology designed for use on the race track, the exterior and interior of the concept study form a precisely harmonised overall package for a thrilling performance.

Compact dimensions, short overhangs, large tracks, optimised weight, a low centre of gravity and a balanced axle load distribution are design principles that helped the classic Mini three achieve overall victories at the Monte Carlo Rally along with other legendary motor racing triumphs five decades ago. The MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept combines these principles with large front and rear aprons, aerodynamically optimised side sills and a striking roof spoiler. The extremely sporty style of the exterior design is underscored with a body finish in Black Jack Anthracite enhanced by accentuations in Curbside Red metallic and Highspeed Orange. The use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and other lightweight materials is clearly visible, too. The authentic character of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is defined by perfect unity of form and function, with a design that promotes both performance qualities and a highly emotional look.

In the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept, traditional racing expertise and progressive technology form the basis for passionate driving fun – on both race track and road. In the interior, the roll-over cage, bucket seats, a puristically designed cockpit and the lack of a rear seat clearly indicate the sporty ambitions of the concept study. But this reduction to the absolute essentials is combined with state-of-the-art digitalisation, too: the MINI Head-Up Display facilitates concentration on what is happening on the road or race track, while the suspension settings can be adjusted by means of a touchscreen in the central instrument.

 

 

More driving fun, more style, no emissions: MINI Electric Concept.

The MINI Electric Concept is modern, purist and efficiently dynamic, providing a look ahead to a new form of urban mobility free of local emissions that still guarantees unmistakable driving fun. The spontaneous response of the electric motor to every movement of the accelerator adds a whole new dimension to hallmark brand agility. The powerful drive of the MINI Electric Concept draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, ensuring maximum range and typical MINI agility combined with emission-free mobility.

The MINI Electric Concept not only stands for increased driving fun, it also adds a touch more style in local emission-free city traffic. Its design combines hallmark brand proportions and design features with specific details reflecting the fact that is purely electrically powered. The radiator grille is closed for superior aerodynamics. There is also fibre glass attachment parts that reduce aerodynamic drag. The paint finish in Reflection Silver and Interchange Yellow is reminiscent of the MINI E presented in 2008. Produced in a small series of some 600, the latter was subjected to field tests in everyday driving conditions, thereby providing key insights for the development of the purely electrically powered BMW i3.

The MINI Electric Concept is the next step along the way to sustainable urban mobility. The BMW Group announced in July 2017 that the expansion of its model range to include electrically powered vehicles was to be a central pillar of its corporate strategy. In this connection, start of production of the first purely electric MINI was announced for 2019. Based on the MINI 3 door, the electric vehicle will be manufactured at the MINI plant in Oxford. Its drivetrain will be produced at the Dingolfing and Landshut sites – the competence centres for e-mobility within the BMW Group production network.

BMW Group launches BMW CarData: new and innovative services for customers, safely and transparently

The BMW Group continues to expand its ground-breaking premium services and, with BMW CarData, is enabling customised service options for BMW drivers based on data from the vehicle.

 


BMW CarData offers many benefits for customers: Drivers can save money on individualised insurance premiums, based, for example, on actual mileage. Or enjoy faster service appointments, because, thanks to ideal preparation, the necessary part has been ordered in advance. But it is also easy to imagine totally new services in the future, such as personalised infotainment options. A BMW with a built-in SIM card is needed to use BMW CarData. Around 8.5 million BMW vehicles currently meet this requirement. Once customers have registered their BMW in the ConnectedDrive portal, they are also able to use BMW CarData at no additional cost.

 

BMW CarData works as follows: The vehicle generates data, including condition data, like mileage; usage-based data, such as average fuel consumption; and event data, like an automated service call. Some of this data is transmitted exclusively, in encrypted form, as so-called telematics data via the permanently installed SIM card to secure BMW servers. From there, with the consent of the customer, service providers can access the encrypted data needed for certain services. Data security is always top priority. Third-party access to the vehicle, which greatly increases the risk of hacking, is avoided. Peter Schwarzenbauer: “For customers, CarData means security, transparency and control over data from your own car, combined with the many benefits of customised services.”

 

BMW CarData allows customers to manage how their telematics data is shared with service providers very simply. All it takes to release data, deny access or withdraw previous consent is a click of the mouse: The customer alone decides whether or not a company receives their data. In this way, customers always maintain control. The BMW Group is the first automotive company to introduce this service, which already conforms to the EU General Data Protection Regulation planned for 2018. The highest level of transparency is guaranteed and customers can request a CarData report of the data released or a CarData archive via the ConnectedDrive portal at any time. The archive contains a detailed list of the telematics data stored in connection with the vehicle and a glossary explaining key terms.

Service providers, such as garages, insurance companies and fleet managers, can register with BMW CarData. If customers want to use a specific service and actively consent to the release of their telematics data, the requesting companies receive the data they need for the service in encrypted form via BMW’s secure backend. This information provides the basis for customised, data-based and innovative service options – from infotainment to smart home functionality – enabling a broad range of value-added services for customers. BMW CarData will be launched in Germany on 30 May 2017 and then gradually rolled out in other markets.

And in the eventuality that not just the road comes to an end but the day, too, there is now even the option of a place to spend the night – for entirely spontaneous use. The Italian specialist AUTOHOME has expanded its product range to include a roof tent that perfectly matches both the look of the new MINI Countryman and the current MINI brand design.

A special edition of the AirTop roof tent model was designed in cooperation with the MINI Design Team and is now available directly from the manufacturer in black or white in keeping with the contrasting colours for roof and outside mirror caps for the new MINI Countryman. AUTOHOME has more than 50 years of experience in developing and making automobile roof tents and its products are used both in the leisure sector and on professional expeditions.

Mounting the mobile shelter is facilitated by the standard roof rails on the new MINI Countryman. This allows you to use the model-specific roof rail carrier – available from the MINI Shop as a MINI Original Accessory. The roof tent attachment system can be mounted on this carrier in a few easy moves without the need for tools. This roof rail carrier provides a solid foundation for the roof tent attachment, which is fixed stably and securely using the steel clamps included.

When closed, the roof tent is barely distinguishable from a conventional transport box. The aerodynamically optimised lines of its fibre-glass housing ensure a reduction in air resistance and wind noise. Opening it is simply a matter of releasing the safety clasps – two at the front and one at the rear. The tent superstructure is then automatically raised by means of four gas pressure springs.

The interior height of the mobile accommodation unit is 94 centimetres. With a stable cover and outer walls in special high-quality fabric, the tent is not only rain proof but also offers optimum ventilation properties as well as a high level of heat and noise insulation. The features of the roof tent include a high-density mattress with cotton cover, two doors and two windows with zips, close-meshed mosquito nets at all openings and a battery-operated LED interior light, as well as luggage nets and pockets to stow personal items. A solid aluminium ladder is provided to climb up onto the top floor of the MINI Countryman.

With its powerful engine, the all-wheel drive system ALL4 and a permitted towing capacity of up to 1 800 kilogrammes, the new MINI Countryman is also suitable for towing a caravan. But it is the roof tent that perfectly preserves the brand’s time-honoured principle of getting the maximum space out of a minimum surface area. The sleeping area for all those MINI fans who want to get away during the day and aim high at night measures 2.10 in length and 1.30 metres in width – sufficient to accommodate outdoor overnight stays for two. It provides a home for wherever the occupants of the new MINI Countryman happen to feel comfortable at any given time. Whether in the countryside, on the beach or in the mountains – wherever the new MINI Countryman conquers new terrain, its roof provides a tent pitch in a top location.

BMW Group confirms additional production of BMW X1 at VDL Nedcar

Rijswijk/Munich. As of August 2017, VDL Nedcar in Born in the Netherlands will begin production of the BMW X1. The move was jointly announced today by the BMW Group and the VDL Group. VDL Nedcar will share production of the BMW X1 for the world market with BMW Group Plant Regensburg. VDL Nedcar has built three MINI models in Born since 2014.The BMW X1 will be the fourth BMW Group model to roll off the production lines at VDL Nedcar.

Strong global demand for the BMW X1 requires additional capacity to supplement production at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg, where the second generation of this successful model has been manufactured since July 2015. With eight different models built on a single line, production volumes at BMW Group Plant Regensburg have risen significantly in recent years. As a consequence of this successful growth, the plant will share BMW X1 production with VDL Nedcar. Over its lifecycle, the main volume of the BMW X1 will still be produced in Regensburg, however.

BMW Group Plant Regensburg and VDL Nedcar are partner plants since early 2014 and have established a close and successful collaboration. VDL Nedcar has many years of experience manufacturing high-quality cars and is a trusted and reliable partner for the BMW Group production network. The involvement of VDL Nedcar as a contract manufacturer gives the BMW Group the flexibility to respond quickly to market demand for the BMW X1.

Peter Haug, Marketing Director of BMW Group Netherlands: “In the Netherlands, demand for BMW X models has been very strong, especially for the BMW X1. Last year, a total of 1,946 units were registered, making it the best sales result since the first generation was launched in 2009. In 2016, no less than 62.2 percent of all X models sold in the Netherlands (3,131 in total) were BMW X1s, which means that one in six BMW models sold was a BMW X1.”

The BMW Group will provide another glimpse into the interior of the future at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas with a selection of trailblazing concepts and revolutionary technology.

 

 

The BMW Group will provide another glimpse into the interior of the future at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas with a selection of trailblazing concepts and revolutionary technology. The BMW HoloActive Touch system, for example, will be making its debut at the show. This innovative interface between the driver and vehicle acts like a virtual touchscreen; its free-floating display is operated using finger gestures and confirms the commands with what the driver perceives as tactile feedback. BMW HoloActive Touch is part of the BMW i Inside Future study, which gives visitors to the CES, taking place on 5 – 8 January 2017, an impression of the mobility experience set to be offered by seamlessly connected and autonomously-driving cars in the future.

BMW HoloActive Touch brings together the advantages of the BMW Head-Up Display, BMW gesture control and direct touchscreen operation, and adds extra features to create a unique form of user interface. For the first time, the functions can be controlled without any physical contact with materials, but the technology still enables the visible and tangible driver-vehicle interaction familiar from conventional touchscreens. BMW HoloActive Touch also allows the user to access the wide variety of services provided by BMW Connected. The seamless integration of the personal digital mobility companion is highlighted even more vividly by the extremely intuitive interaction.

BMW has developed a track record for presenting pioneering advances in the field of display and operating concepts at previous editions of the CES. The BMW gesture control technology unveiled at the show in 2015 is now available in both the new BMW 7 Series and new BMW 5 Series models. And the AirTouch system showcased at CES 2016 took things a step further; here, the user employs simple gestures made with an open hand to activate control pads on a large panoramic display in the dashboard without having to touch the control interface.

BMW HoloActive Touch takes operating these functions and interacting with the vehicle to another level. Similarly to the Head-Up Display, the image of a full-colour display is generated by clever use of reflections – but now in free-floating form within the interior rather than through projection onto the windscreen. It displays flexibly configurable control pads and is visible to the driver next to the steering wheel at the height of the centre console. A camera detects the driver’s hand movements within this ergonomically user-friendly area, and registers the position of their fingertips, in particular. As soon as a fingertip makes contact with one of these virtual control surfaces, a pulse is emitted and the relevant function is activated.

BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create the highest-powered charging network in Europe. The goal is the quick build-up of a sizable number of stations in order to enable long-range travel for battery electric vehicle drivers. This will be an important step towards facilitating mass-market BEV adoption.

The projected ultra-fast high-powered charging network with power levels up to 350 kW will be significantly faster than the most powerful charging system deployed today. The build-up is planned to start in 2017. An initial target of about 400 sites in Europe is planned. By 2020 the customers should have access to thousands of high-powered charging points. The goal is to enable long-distance travel through open-network charging stations along highways and major thoroughfares, which has not been feasible for most BEV drivers to date. The charging experience is expected to evolve to be as convenient as refueling at conventional gas stations.

The network will be based on Combined Charging System (CCS) standard technology. The planned charging infrastructure expands the existing technical standard for AC- and DC charging of electric vehicles to the next level of capacity for DC fast charging with up to 350 kW. BEVs that are engineered to accept this full power of the charge stations can recharge brand-independently in a fraction of the time of today’s BEVs. The network is intended to serve all CCS equipped vehicles to facilitate the BEV adoption in Europe.


BMW Group

Daimler AG

Ford Motor Company

AUDI AG

“We intend to create a network that allows our customers on long-distance trips to use a coffee break for recharging,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “Reliable fast charging services are a key factor for drivers to choose an electric vehicle. With this cooperation we want to boost a broader market adoption of e-mobility and speed up the shift towards emission-free driving.”

 

Porsche AG

“There are two decisive aspects for us: ultra-fast charging and placing the charging stations at the right positions,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Together, these two factors enable us to travel in an all-electrically powered car as in a conventional combustion engine vehicle. As automobile manufacturer, we actively shape our future, not only by developing all-electrically powered vehicles but by building up the necessary infrastructure as well.”

BMW-gruppen, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company og Volkswagen-konsernet med Audi og Porsche har signert en intensjonsavtale om å bygge det største nettverket av hurtigladestasjoner i Europa. Målet er en rask utbygging av et betydelig antall stasjoner som gjør det mulig å foreta lengre reiser i elektriske biler. Dette vil være et viktig skritt på veien mot et massemarked for elektriske biler.


Det prosjekterte, lynraske ladenettverket, med effektnivåer opp til 350 kW, vil tilby betydelig raskere lading enn dagens ladesystemer. Byggingen er planlagt å starte i 2017. Et første mål er å få ca. 400 ladestasjoner i Europa. Innen 2020 skal kundene ha tilgang til tusenvis av de kraftige ladestasjonene.

Målet er å gjøre langkjøring med elektriske biler mulig gjennom et åpent ladenettverk langs motorveier og store gjennomfartsårer. På sikt er målet at det skal være like praktisk å lade en el-bil som å fylle drivstoff på en bensinstasjon.

Nettverket skal bygges på standarden CCS (Combined Charging System). Den planlagte ladestrukturen skal utvikle den eksisterende standarden for AC- og DC-lading av el-biler til et forbedret nivå av DC hurtiglading opp til 350 kW. Elektriske biler som er bygget for å godta den fulle effekten kan – uavhengig av merke – lade til en brøkdel av den tiden det tar i dag. Nettverket er ment å betjene alle CCS-utstyrte biler for å lette introduksjonen av elektriske biler i Europa.

BMW-gruppen:

Med dette samarbeidet ønsker vi å få en økt og bredere markedsadopsjon av mobilitet med elektriske biler og fremskynde skiftet til utslippsfri kjøring.

Ford Motor Company:

– En pålitelig og lynrask infrastruktur for lading er viktig for massemarkedets aksept og har potensiale til å forvandle muligheten for kjøring med elektriske biler, sier toppsjefen i Ford Motor Company, Mark Fields. – Ford har forpliktet seg til å utvikle kjøretøy og teknologier som gjør folks liv enklere. Dette ladenettverket vil gjøre det enklere og mer praktisk for kunder i hele Europa å eie en elektrisk bil.

Bilprodusentene planlegger betydelige investeringer for å etablere dette nettverket. Dette understreker også selskapenes tro på elektrisk mobilitet. Partnerne BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company og Volkswagen-gruppen vil være likeverdige i et joint venture samarbeid. Andre bilmerker vil også bli oppfordret til å delta i nettverket for å bidra til å etablere praktiske ladeløsninger for elektriske biler. Partnerne har også til hensikt å samarbeide med regionale partnere for å sikre at nettverket raskt blir en realitet.
