Stars set for toughest ever course

Dakar Rally from January 6-20, 2018.

Dakar team line-ups revealed as former champions face brutal title challenges.

The Red Bull Desert Wings squad will face a tough challenge to their Dakar Rally dominance when the 40th edition of the iconic rally raid race returns to South America from January 6-20, 2018.

Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel knows all too well what you need to conjure up in order to succeed over the rocky and sandy terrain having won the event 13 times on both two and four wheels.

In order to defend his car title, the 52-year-old will not only have to fend off Team Peugeot Total team-mates Carlos Sainz, Cyril Despres and Sébastien Loeb but the likes of MINI rookie Bryce Menzies and former champions Nasser Al-Attiyah and Giniel De Villiers.

Peterhansel said, “The tension builds in September that gives way to pure excitement in December when you just want to get out there and do some kilometres, then, when you finally arrive, you’re flat-out from the off.”

Thirty-year-old American Menzies added, “It was very unfortunate that I had to give up my chance at the 2017 Dakar. It has been my lifetime ambition to compete so it was tough to have to wait one more year. But now I’m ready to race the most difficult rally-raid in the world.”

Slovnaft Team’s Stefan Svitko will be one rider hoping to break Red Bull KTM Factory Team’s stranglehold in the bike series after 17 consecutive Dakar wins.

Sam Sunderland is the reigning champion, however, Australian team-mate Toby Price is also eager to get his crown back after he crashed out in the latest edition.

The 30-year-old declared, “I was off riding for close to eight or nine months. It’s clearly not the preparation any rider would want leading up to the biggest race of the year, but then you don’t forget how to ride a motorcycle.”

Chilean Ignacio Casale finished second in the quads category in 2017 but believes he can go one better this time around after clinching his first win back in 2014.

He revealed, “I’ve had good results this year including a win at the Atacama Rally. As well as racing I’ve been very focused on training and testing.”

Finally, in the trucks, Dmitry Sotnikov will be hoping to get the better of Team Kamaz Master team-mate Eduard Nikolaev – who won by nearly 19 minutes in 2017.

The Russian claimed, “From the very beginning of the race there’s heat and dunes and then the high altitude of Bolivia. This course is going to be tough for crews and their trucks.”

AUTOHOME roof tent

For everyone who wants to get away – and aim high: the AUTOHOME roof tent for the new MINI Countryman.

Courtesy of BMW Group

MINI Countryman arouses the spirit of discovery. With generous space for up to five occupants and their luggage as well as the optional all-wheel drive system ALL4, the latest generation of the British premium brand’s all-rounder is perfectly equipped for outings that go far beyond the limits of urban mobility and asphalted roads. And in the eventuality that not just the road comes to an end but the day, too, there is now even the option of a place to spend the night – for entirely spontaneous use. The Italian specialist AUTOHOME has expanded its product range to include a roof tent that perfectly matches both the look of the new MINI Countryman and the current MINI brand design.

A special edition of the AirTop roof tent model was designed in cooperation with the MINI Design Team and is now available directly from the manufacturer in black or white in keeping with the contrasting colours for roof and outside mirror caps for the new MINI Countryman. AUTOHOME has more than 50 years of experience in developing and making automobile roof tents and its products are used both in the leisure sector and on professional expeditions.

Mounting the mobile shelter is facilitated by the standard roof rails on the new MINI Countryman. This allows you to use the model-specific roof rail carrier – available from the MINI Shop as a MINI Original Accessory. The roof tent attachment system can be mounted on this carrier in a few easy moves without the need for tools. This roof rail carrier provides a solid foundation for the roof tent attachment, which is fixed stably and securely using the steel clamps included.

When closed, the roof tent is barely distinguishable from a conventional transport box. The aerodynamically optimised lines of its fibre-glass housing ensure a reduction in air resistance and wind noise. Opening it is simply a matter of releasing the safety clasps – two at the front and one at the rear. The tent superstructure is then automatically raised by means of four gas pressure springs.

The interior height of the mobile accommodation unit is 94 centimetres. With a stable cover and outer walls in special high-quality fabric, the tent is not only rain proof but also offers optimum ventilation properties as well as a high level of heat and noise insulation. The features of the roof tent include a high-density mattress with cotton cover, two doors and two windows with zips, close-meshed mosquito nets at all openings and a battery-operated LED interior light, as well as luggage nets and pockets to stow personal items. A solid aluminium ladder is provided to climb up onto the top floor of the MINI Countryman.

With its powerful engine, the all-wheel drive system ALL4 and a permitted towing capacity of up to 1 800 kilogrammes, the new MINI Countryman is also suitable for towing a caravan. But it is the roof tent that perfectly preserves the brand’s time-honoured principle of getting the maximum space out of a minimum surface area. The sleeping area for all those MINI fans who want to get away during the day and aim high at night measures 2.10 in length and 1.30 metres in width – sufficient to accommodate outdoor overnight stays for two. It provides a home for wherever the occupants of the new MINI Countryman happen to feel comfortable at any given time. Whether in the countryside, on the beach or in the mountains – wherever the new MINI Countryman conquers new terrain, its roof provides a tent pitch in a top location.

High-Power Charging Along Major Highways in Europe

Joint Venture to deploy a high-powered DC charging network for battery electric vehicles (BEV) covering long-distance travel routes in Europe.

BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen Group with Audi & Porsche Plan a Joint Venture for Ultra-Fast, High-Power Charging Along Major Highways in Europe.

Joint Venture to deploy a high-powered DC charging network for battery electric vehicles (BEV) covering long-distance travel routes in Europe

Power levels up to 350 kW significantly reduce charging time compared to available systems

Build-up of about 400 ultra-fast charging sites planned in Europe

Network is based on the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard which uses a connector that is fully compatible with most current and next generations BEVs

BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create the highest-powered charging network in Europe. The goal is the quick build-up of a sizable number of stations in order to enable long-range travel for battery electric vehicle drivers. This will be an important step towards facilitating mass-market BEV adoption.

The projected ultra-fast high-powered charging network with power levels up to 350 kW will be significantly faster than the most powerful charging system deployed today. The build-up is planned to start in 2017. An initial target of about 400 sites in Europe is planned. By 2020 the customers should have access to thousands of high-powered charging points. The goal is to enable long-distance travel through open-network charging stations along highways and major thoroughfares, which has not been feasible for most BEV drivers to date. The charging experience is expected to evolve to be as convenient as refueling at conventional gas stations.

The network will be based on Combined Charging System (CCS) standard technology. The planned charging infrastructure expands the existing technical standard for AC- and DC charging of electric vehicles to the next level of capacity for DC fast charging with up to 350 kW. BEVs that are engineered to accept this full power of the charge stations can recharge brand-independently in a fraction of the time of today’s BEVs. The network is intended to serve all CCS equipped vehicles to facilitate the BEV adoption in Europe.

BMW Group

“This high-power charging network provides motorists with another strong argument to move towards electric mobility,” says Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “The BMW Group has initiated numerous public charging infrastructure projects over the last years. The joint project is another major milestone clearly demonstrating that competitors are combining forces to ramp-up e-mobility.”

Daimler AG

“The breakthrough of e-mobility requires two things: convincing vehicles and a comprehensive charging infrastructure. With our new brand EQ, we are launching our electric product offensive: by 2025, our portfolio will include more than ten fully electric passenger cars. Together with our partners, we are now installing the highest-powered charging infrastructure in Europe,” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The availability of high-power stations allows long-distance e-mobility for the first time and will convince more and more customers to opt for an electric vehicle.”

Ford Motor Company

“A reliable, ultra-fast charging infrastructure is important for mass consumer adoption and has the potential to transform the possibilities for electric driving,” says Mark Fields, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company. “Ford is committed to developing vehicles and technologies that make people’s lives better, and this charging network will make it easier and more practical for customers across Europe to own electrified vehicles.”

AUDI AG

“We intend to create a network that allows our customers on long-distance trips to use a coffee break for recharging,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “Reliable fast charging services are a key factor for drivers to choose an electric vehicle. With this cooperation we want to boost a broader market adoption of e-mobility and speed up the shift towards emission-free driving.”

Porsche AG

“There are two decisive aspects for us: ultra-fast charging and placing the charging stations at the right positions,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Together, these two factors enable us to travel in an all-electrically powered car as in a conventional combustion engine vehicle. As automobile manufacturer, we actively shape our future, not only by developing all-electrically powered vehicles but by building up the necessary infrastructure as well.”

p90226977_highres_the-bmw-m5-competiti

More power and further enhanced handling characteristics.
The familiar 4.4‑litre, high-revving V8 engine featuring path-breaking BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology is the powerful heart of the BMW M5 “Competition Edition”. An increase in boost pressure as well as targeted modifications to the engine management raise the car’s performance vs. the production model by 29 kW/40 hp to 441 kW/600 hp. At the same time, maximum torque has increased by 20 Newton metres to 700 Newton metres.

The increase in power output harmonises perfectly with the Competition Package, which is supplied as standard on the BMW M5 “Competition Edition” and noticeably enhances the car’s handling characteristics even further. The Competition Package includes, inter alia, a lowering of the vehicle by 10 millimetres and a firmer setup of spring and damper systems and stabilizers. In conjunction with this modified setup, the specific control setting for the Active M differential fitted as standard on all BMW M5 models ensures further optimized traction. Furthermore, the steering system with an M specific Servotronic function comes with a more direct control map, providing the driver with more precise response and further enhancing the car’s agility in bends. In addition, the M Dynamic Mode of the stability control system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) has been further aligned to sporty handling characteristics. As a result, the BMW M5 “Competition Edition” guarantees typical M driving dynamics at the highest level both in everyday traffic and on the racetrack, especially when combined with the optional M carbon-ceramic brake system.

BMW 2002 Hommage

BMW 2002 Hommage celebrates the birth of the turbocharged car. Design study pays tribute to legendary motor racing glories at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach.

From - BMW Press Club:

At the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, the BMW Group is presenting the BMW 2002 Hommage to shine the spotlight back over its successful history with turbocharged engines. In 1973 the BMW 2002 turbo became the first series-produced vehicle in Europe to feature turbo technology. In so doing, it turned the BMW 02 into a full-blooded sports car. Looking back, the advent of BMW turbo engine technology pointed the way for both the development of the sportiest BMW sedans and milestones such as the first Formula One World Championship title for a turbocharged car – won by Nelson Piquet in 1983.

“The BMW 2002 Hommage celebrates the extraordinary feats of engineering on which BMW turbo technology is based and re-interprets them in the form of a design study,” says Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles. “With its iconic orange/black paintwork, the car has a colour scheme and livery synonymous in the minds of many motor sport fans with the triumphs of the 1970s.”

The model unveiled in Pebble Beach writes the next chapter in a story begun by the BMW 2002 Hommage, which the company presented at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May.

A confident statement of unadulterated driving joy.

The sporting silhouette of the BMW 2002 Hommage lies low against the road. Its compact proportions; complete with long wheelbase, short overhangs and prominent “shark nose”, promise a driving experience that thrills with irresistible dynamics and agility. Aerodynamic details like the large spoilers at the front and rear team up with the profusion of air intakes and exits to optimise airflow around the car and maximise downforce in every driving situation.

Historic details with a modern twist.

A particularly striking feature of the car’s flanks are the pronounced wheel arches, which frame the body like four brackets and add stature. In the process, they recall the homologated version of the BMW 2002 turbo, which needed broad extensions bolted onto its body to accommodate a significantly wider track. The Hommage car integrates this detail neatly. Sleek surfacing and precisely chiselled lines envelop the powerful wheel arches and hand them a starring role.

In perhaps the most literal reference of the original 2002, the 2002 Hommage features a unifying “waterline” to connect many of the car’s formal elements. This unbroken carbon fiber line physically wraps around the car from front to rear, while also creating a horizontal distinction between upper and lower body surfaces. 20-inch light-alloy wheels in bi-colour design round off the styling as the car meets the road. The modern looks of these lavishly milled, multi-spoke items recall the racing rims of bygone eras, while gold-coloured brake callipers bearing the M logo add an extra stamp of class.

Fronted by 50 years of BMW history.

The front end of the BMW 2002 Hommage is a confident and extravagantly dynamic affair; its styling bridges a gap of 50 years in combining the characteristic, horizontal grill graphic of the 02 series with modern elements of BMW design. In its lines and form, the bonnet references the “spear” contour stretching down the centre of the 02 models that swells slightly into a surround for the BMW logo as it approaches the kidney grille. Further precise lines lend structure and definition to the matt surface.

Occupying centre stage at the front end is the familiar BMW kidney grille. Here, it takes the form of a low-standing, connected unit, offering a flesh slant on the kidneys’ historical rendering as a cohesive design element. Sculpted, black double-bars add finesse to the details of the broad-set grille. Like the BMW 2002, the BMW 2002 Hommage also has two single round headlights that provide the striking front end with its outer limits. The headlights’ reflective gold colouring is a pointer to the “golden” 50th anniversary of the BMW 2002’s launch. The headlights also reprise the yellow hue commonly found in the headlamps of racing cars back in the day. An unbroken horizontal black band unites the design elements of the front end and in so doing, underlines the car’s wide and athletic stance. Those with a keen eye will also pick out the turn signal repeaters, which – like those of the car’s forebear – are located separately from the headlights and embedded in the wrap-around carbon fiber waterline element.

The large front apron, a stylistic and functional aerodynamic nod to those models of the 1970s, shortens the visual distance between the BMW 2002 Hommage and the road. Together with the car’s wide, sporting stance, this technically innovative, forward-thinking design sends out a message of top-class roadholding and handling flair through fast corners. Now, as in the heyday of the BMW 2002, design excellence and turbo technology bring unsurpassed levels of fun to twisty race tracks, country roads and mountain passes alike. The “turbo” lettering in mirror writing on the front apron casts the mind back to the original decals of the 2002 turbo. Accent surfaces in exposed carbon mark the point where the front apron and side skirts hand over to the road, and also provide a technically alluring contrast to the body-coloured surfaces.

Bringing matters to a sporting conclusion.

The rear-end design of the BMW 2002 Hommage also calls on elements of the 2002 turbo. For example, the horizontal sub-division of the car’s generous surfaces and its clear lines make a width-emphasising and thus suitably dynamic statement, laced with modern feel. The almost rectangular lights provide a stylistic border for the rear end. The glass covers have a contemporary black-panel look and only offer a view of the inner workings when the lights illuminate. All you can see when they are dormant is an unbroken black surface. As at the front of the car, this strengthens the impression of a strip wrapped around the car. The asymmetric BMW logo placement to the right of the license plate between the two rear lights is likewise a characteristic element of 02 rear styling. The muscular wheel arches bookend the rear section and accentuate the wide track, while a precise spoiler lip brings a modern edge to the car’s detailing. A carbon diffuser integrates the now familiar two sets of twin exhaust tailpipes and wraps up the rear styling with a sporting flourish.

BMW’s fresh interpretation of the BMW 2002 adopts the form of a compact sports coupe in the classical tradition of BMW Hommage cars. But more than that, the BMW 2002 Hommage represents a clear statement of how pure driving pleasure is defined in 2016.
