Fernando Alonso to race Le Mans 2018

Alonso will drive the Toyota WEC car in a test in Bahrain on 19 November, the day after 2017 season’s final F1 race.

BBC and others reports:

 

The two-time Formula One World Championship will not be returning to Indy in 2018. Alonso might be making a run at winning the biggest race of them all, the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The BBC is reporting that Alonso has agreed to a deal with Toyota to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next June, which falls between F1’s races in Canada and France.

Red Bull Racing: Taking the taste test 

DURIAN FRUIT CHALLENGE

It’s known as the ‘King of Fruits’, is reckoned to be something of a delicacy, and it’s banned from most hotels across Asia. So pungently awful is the smell of a ripe, opened Durian fruit that it has been known to induce vomiting and can linger for days. Brilliant – we’re in Singapore, Max and Daniel are here, so let’s make ’em eat one then. Better still give them one each!


We dragged the boys out to a scenic deck near the Singapore circuit and presented them with two thorny, fruity problems…..

A variety of tools were provided with which the boys could attempt to get at the flesh of their Durian, including hacksaws, hammers and for some unknown reason a plastic mallet and a brace of squeaky rubber chickens.

Daniel had no problem with his Durian, but Max’s proved a tougher nut to crack. Undeterred by mother nature’s prevention plans or, indeed, logic, Max went full physical assault on his Durian and after dispensing with an ineffective hacksaw attempted the scientifically proven ‘if we throw it really hard, it might burst’ method.

Success! With both fruits opened and the deck smelling like something diabolical had passed away underneath it several weeks ago, the time had come for the taste test.

Daniel was first to go and after a couple of small retches managed to chow down on what we will say was the tiniest sliver of fruit.

“It burns! It tastes worse than it smells,” he moaned as Max laughed like a drain, or like a man surprisingly blind to the fact that he has to follow suit.

The results, which involved a lot of gagging, demands for water and a trip to the balcony railings, were not pretty.

Kudos, though, to our two intrepid heroes. Like the have-a-go daredevils they are, they looked the fearsome Durian in its spiky face and – lost. Yep, they failed big time. Horrible, evil-smelling, fruit 1 – Not very heroic racers 0.

A dream fulfilled: Nico Rosberg ends his racing career

For the team, this is an unexpected situation but also an exciting one. We are going into a new era of technical regulations and there is a free Mercedes cockpit for the seasons ahead.

2016 FIA Formula One World Champion elect Nico Rosberg today announced that he will stop racing in Formula One with immediate effect.

In an emotional address prior to the 2016 FIA Prize Giving in Vienna, Austria, Nico revealed the reasons behind his decision, which was reached following his crowning achievement in Abu Dhabi last Sunday.

Nico has competed in a total of 206 Grands Prix and won 23 of them, placing him joint 12th on the all-time list alongside Nelson Piquet. He has scored 30 pole positions (8th all time) and 20 fastest laps.

Last Sunday in Abu Dhabi, he became the first German driver to win a Formula One World Championship at the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow.

 

Nico Rosberg:

“Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One World Champion. Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I’ve made it. I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right. My strongest emotion right now is deep gratitude to everybody who supported me to make that dream happen.

“This season, I tell you, it was so damn tough. I pushed like crazy in every area after the disappointments of the last two years; they fuelled my motivation to levels I had never experienced before. And of course that had an impact on the ones I love, too – it was a whole family effort of sacrifice, putting everything behind our target. I cannot find enough words to thank my wife Vivian; she has been incredible. She understood that this year was the big one, our opportunity to do it, and created the space for me to get full recovery between every race, looking after our daughter each night, taking over when things got tough and putting our championship first.

“When I won the race in Suzuka, from the moment when the destiny of the title was in my own hands, the big pressure started and I began to think about ending my racing career if I became World Champion. On Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi, I knew that it could be my last race and that feeling cleared my head before the start. I wanted to enjoy every part of the experience, knowing it might be the last time… and then the lights went out and I had the most intense 55 laps of my life. I took my decision on Monday evening. After reflecting for a day, the first people I told were Vivian and Georg (Nolte, from Nico’s management team), followed by Toto.

“The only thing that makes this decision in any way difficult for me is because I am putting my racing family into a tough situation. But Toto understood. He knew straight away that I was completely convinced and that reassured me. My proudest achievement in racing will always be to have won the world championship with this incredible team of people, the Silver Arrows.

“Now, I’m just here to enjoy the moment. There is time to savour the next weeks, to reflect on the season and to enjoy every experience that comes my way. After that, I will turn the next corner in my life and see what it has in store for me…”

As a part of the Renault family, I want to develop the car and write new success stories.

Twenty-nine year-old Nico has raced in 111 Formula 1 Grands Prix since making his debut in 2010. Nico’s motorsport CV includes a Formula 1 pole position in his debut season, winning the GP2 Series at his first attempt as well as victory in his first Le Mans 24 Hours. Currently driving for Force India, Nico has previously raced for Williams and Sauber in Formula 1.

Malaysian GP 2016 – Saturday report from Renault Sport Formula One Team

2016 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix, Saturday

Renault Sport Formula One Team drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer will line up on the seventh and tenth rows of the grid for the Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix. The R.S.16 showed improved relative performance in qualifying at the Sepang International Circuit however neither driver felt they extracted the maximum from their crucial laps today. Kevin, Jolyon and the team are focussed on achieving points-scoring results tomorrow.

“It’s a very good result for us in qualifying; P14 is much better than usual in terms of setting us up for scoring some points in the race. But it’s an ambivalent result as I felt so close to Q3 that I couldn’t resist giving it everything I’ve got on my final run; I locked up in turn 1 and lost the lap. I didn’t improve after that so it’s unfortunate. From P14, not a lot has to happen in the top ten for us to get points, which is always the aim. Let’s see tomorrow, hopefully our race pace is as good as qualifying today. You never really know how it will go here, so fingers crossed!”

“I’ll be frank; my lap was pretty far from what it should have been. I made the wrong call on set-up between my runs and the lap just didn’t come together. This was particularly frustrating as the pace has looked promising all weekend and there’s definitely better possible from the car here. Tomorrow I’ll be pushing all the way to make amends especially as this is a track where moving up the order is possible.”

How was qualifying for the team?
It was an encouraging session in terms of the pace potential from the car; had Kevin had a perfect lap on his fresh tyres in Q2, P12 was definitely in the offing. Jolyon struggled to get his lap together in Q1 and that was a shame for him as he’s looked strong here for the rest of the weekend.
What are the considerations for tomorrow’s race?
We have 56 laps tomorrow and our long run pace should prove to be advantageous. The three tyre compounds here offer many strategy options on this new track surface, which works the tyres very differently from before. We accumulated a lot of data yesterday and today so it will be interesting to see how the race plays out. We’re most certainly looking to move forward and up the order. Points are definitely the target.

Kevin Magnussen looks forward to the ambiance of the Autodromo di Monza.
First and foremost, how are you after the accident in Spa?
I’m feeling OK, thanks. It was a big crash and I was sore but fortunately had nothing worse than a bruised ankle. I’ve had some more checks in Denmark and am working with my physio to keep fit. I feel I’m ready to race in Monza. The FIA will of course have the final word but I really want to and I’m confident that by then it will be fine.

Monza is one of the classic tracks on the calendar. What do you think makes it so special?
There are many reasons, but I think that the fact it has so much history makes it a special event. The track is unique as well, with very long straights and slow corners. It does have some high speed corners that are a challenge too, so it’s just really cool. Added to that you have one of the best atmospheres of the season.

Have you been to see the old track?
It is definitely really cool to see and so different to what we know in F1 today. Back then they were racing on an oval track with massive banking in cars that were so basic and so fast without any seatbelts! It is really special to see and stand on it and feel the atmosphere. It’s one of those things where it’s really hard to imagine how it must have felt – when you watch Le Mans now you can imagine how it must feel as the track is not so different, but when you see videos from Monza back then you cannot absorb how it must have been – everything was so different.

Talking now about your history at the track – how have you done at Monza in the past?
In all honesty it’s not been the best track for me but it has been ok. I have had podiums in nearly everything I’ve driven but never won there, so clearly we need to fix that!

Monza is the second high-speed track in a row after Spa. Performance in Belgium steadily built over the weekend and in qualifying it all came together for the best session of the year. Do you think you can keep that going in Italy?
Belgium was good and we did improve over the weekend. Italy is another track and while it does have some of the same characteristics it’s not exactly the same. What we have learnt is that we have to take each circuit as it comes and react to the situation you find yourself in. I expect it will be hot again too, so I need to stay focussed. You can’t really prepare for the heat – you just need to stay hydrated and stay in the shade.

You had some great support in Belgium from the fans, does it make a difference to you to know they are in the grandstands?
You can feel the fans around the circuit and it’s nice to be able to meet some during the pitlane walkabout or autograph session. I’m the only Dane racing so when I see a Danish flag I know it’s for me and that’s very nice. It does give a boost, and when I see them on the out or in laps, it’s really cool.

Will you be indulging in some pizza or pasta over the weekend?
I love Italy, but this weekend I will have to stay away from pizza. I’ll stick to the pasta, caprese and carpaccio, thank you!

News from Kevin Magnussen

KEVIN MAGNUSSEN

At the Belgian Grand Prix held at Spa-Francorchamps Sunday 28 August, the Renault Sport Formula One Team Kevin Magnussen driver left the track at high speed. After a preliminary examination at the circuit medical center, Kevin was transferred to Verviers hospital for routine checks.

He was released from the hospital the same day to return home. In Denmark, he underwent further tests indicating that it will be able to compete in the Italian Grand Prix in six days.

Thursday at Monza, the FIA will conduct a final carry to confirm if Kevin is able to run.

“I feel much better, which is very good news,” commented Kevin. “I spent several checks showing that I can ride at Monza and I am confident that the FIA will see it this week. We were in the top ten in Belgium and I am extremely motivated to start this weekend. “

How are you looking forward to the Austrian Grand Prix?
I’m particularly looking forward to it. Austria is more my type of country, with the fresh air and mountains. It’s great to be away from a city for a Grand Prix and the circuit itself is really good. It’s small, but it’s high speed. It has a really nice flow and there are good opportunities for overtaking – like into turn two. I like it.

You’ve raced there before; what were your thoughts?
I had a decent race and qualifying there in 2014 so there’s nothing bad I can say about it. I’m headed there in a very positive frame of mind and I can’t wait to get out in action.

How do you sum-up your Baku weekend?
We learned a lot in Baku. We tried a variety of set-ups and did make progress in our understanding of the car. My car wasn’t too bad in the race and we made the best of our opportunities. Obviously, we all want stronger results but we all knew this would be a tough season where we’d have to dig deep and work hard. Ultimately we’re here for the long term.

Charles Leclerc Set for FP1 Sessions with Haas F1 Team

Haas F1 Team driver Esteban Gutiérrez, a Ferrari Driver Academy alumnus, has relinquished his seat to allow Leclerc to obtain valuable Formula One experience.

Charles Leclerc, a 2016 member of the Ferrari Driver Academy who is currently competing in the GP3 Series for ART Grand Prix, will get his first taste of a Formula One car when he drives the VF-16 for Haas F1 Team on July 8 during the first practice session (FP1) for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

 

Haas F1 Team driver Esteban Gutiérrez, a Ferrari Driver Academy alumnus, has relinquished his seat to allow Leclerc to obtain valuable Formula One experience. Following Silverstone, the 18-year-old Leclerc will reappear in FP1 sessions July 22 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, July 29 at the German Grand Prix, Sept. 30 at the Malaysian Grand Prix and Nov. 25 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In each session, Leclerc will drive Haas F1 Team’s No. 21 car.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to get seat time in a Formula One car and I can’t thank Haas F1 Team and Esteban enough,” said Leclerc, who won the season-opening GP3 Series race May 14 at Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya. “I’m honored by the faith Haas F1 Team and Ferrari have in me. This is an important step toward my ultimate goal of becoming a Formula One driver.”

Leclerc has quickly risen through the karting ranks and into single-seat, open-wheel machines. After winning 11 karting championships between 2005 and 2013, including an outright title in the 2012 WSK Euro Series Championship, Leclerc graduated to Formula Renault 2.0 in 2014, collecting a pole, two wins and nine podiums in 14 races. In 2015, Leclerc moved to the FIA Formula 3 EuroSeries, earning three poles, four wins and 13 podiums in 33 races.

“Charles Leclerc is highly regarded by Ferrari and his record speaks for itself,” said Guenther Steiner, team principal, Haas F1 Team. “We’re happy to provide this opportunity and help develop the next generation of Formula One drivers. Credit also goes to Esteban for sharing his racecar and serving as a mentor to Charles.”
